These are some photos from a September 2003 Enchantment Lakes backpacking trip. The Enchantments are a series of lakes and tarns remaining in glacier carved basins surrounded by steep rocky peaks with sparse vegetation. We were fortunate enough to hit the Enchantments at the end of the month with a stretch of nice weather as well as at the time of the turning of the larches. Golden Larches, one of the very few coniferous tree species in North America which changes color, are essentially a pine tree that turns from green to yellow and then to gold in Autumn. Additionally, there was a fairly large forest fire, the Crystal Creek Fire, raging several miles to the South during our trip just on the other side of the Stuart range above Ingalls Creek. At times this fire filled the sky with smoke and in some pictures you can see the reddish/brown lighting that occured from sunlight filtered through the smoke:
