Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra, the fortress.

The earliest history of Kaliakra is connected with the thracian trube ‘thirisi’. During the 4th
century B.C. the small and fortified settlement was known as ‘thirisis’. Eight centuries later the
settlement and the fourtress were named Acre. At the beginning of the 7th century A.D. the
settlement was destroyed and deserted. During the second half of the seventh century the cape
was inluded in the bulgarian state.
The cape and the rebult fortress were mentioned for the first time under the name Kaliakra during
the 13th century. During the second half of the 14th century the fortress became the capital
of Dobrudja prinipality. During Dobotitsa’s reign Kaliakra was an important political, economical
and cultural centre of Medival Bulgaria. The town – fortress had existed till the end of 17th century.
