The Ivanovo Rock Monastery is situated 20km south of the town of Rousse (Ruse), close to the village of Ivanovo.
It's actually a complex of rock caves, scattered in the rocky area. The cluster of caves represents a network of small churches, chapels and cells in the magnificent canyon of the river Roussenski Lom.
The caves were inhabited by monks in the 11th - 15th century period. Hermit monks started to settle here, digging cave cells, churches and chapels into the rocks.
It’s estimated, the rock churches to have been up to 40 with approximately 300 monks living in the complex. Unfortunately, most of these are no longer preserved.
Most of the featured photos show the most famous cave church due to its beautiful and well-preserve wall murals (paintings).
