Cycling in Portland, Oregon

I started bike racing in Portland in 1962. My racing career was not so spectacular, but it set me on a lifelong path of photographing bike races. Since I fled Beaverton in 1965 I've shot races in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and one race in Europe. Hopefully, I'll be shooting for another 30 years at least, until I'm in my mid-90s! In the meantime, let's see if we can identify every rider who appears here!

Enjoyed all these photos . Started riding bikes in 1969 bought a Bianchi and like you not spectacular but had a great time.

My family lived across the street from the Leusenkamp family in Silver Spring Maryland and I remember playing with Carl when I was five years old. Our family stayed friends with his family for many years. I always knew Carl had this "fearless" quality about him, even when we were five years of age, because he loved the rain and the thunderstorms and it did not bother him one bit! I got my first bike when we lived there and I biked until I was about 38/39 years old. I never competed. I had a J.C. Higgins racing bike.

Thanks for posting these. I was involved with racing in Portland for several years. I probably promoted some of those Rose Festival races you have pictured. I was a member of the Rose City Wheelmen. Phil was a great friend of mine as well. I still recall being on the starting line at Alpenrose. He was coming along to each rider saying "Are you ready?" and when he got to me he said "Can you beat these guys?"

I have some photos from the 1971 Oregon CycloCross series and would like to share them with Clark Henry and Bill Hawley, two riders I raced against back then. Anyone know how to reach them?

What a great assortment of pictures.....ones that bring back such happy memories! Carl (Leusenkamp) and I married and moved to Portland after we fell in love with the NW and Alpenrose Dairy in 1967 during the National Championships. We spent many a happy day at the track and him riding in the rain. Chuck Richards, Dirk Pauwels, John Beckman, Don Curey.... so many friends and so much loving support. Our son Eric and I have been in AZ since '85....right after the LA Olympics....but still LOVE Portland and everyone associated with our early life and cycling days there.

Wow, this is a blast from the past! I raced with all of these guys from 76' to 84'. I remember when John Beckman brought Erik Heiden back from Colorado Springs to ride with us. Will always remember Phil starting the races and his speeches to the riders before Mt. Tabor races. Great pictures. My dad was Peter Thompson; Grand Master rider. He loved all of these guys like family.
