1977 James Mason

Mixed technology

Seattle

Roy Stetina, father of fast bike racers, rides an Exxon Graftek bike at the '77 Nationals in Seattle. The Graftek was the first and at that time the only bicycle made from carbon fiber. Around his neck is an Exakta camera, the most atavistic camera of the day. It was also the only left-handed camera ever made. My uncle loved his Exakta. In 1963 he bought a Leica and decided the M3 didn't measure up to the Exakta. He gave me the Leica and I still use it. Wayne Stetina won the National Championship road race that day, also on an Exxon Graftek.

You must have meant to add USA-national-rider PETER STETINA, 20 -year-old son of Dale. And, James, MANY THANKS for the great picture of Roy (1917-2007). In 1977 he was 60, here coachingWayne and Dale in an important race. Roy was an accomplished advertising artist, teacher and portrait painter. But to Roy, our four sons and the world of competative bicycle racing was tops. Wayne sent me this picture on 12/20/07 which would have been Roy's 90th birthday.

The man in the photo is Roy Stetina father of Wayne, Dale, Joel, Troy and probably some other Stetina which escapes me. Wayne and Dale were the most accomplished of the brothers winning many national championships, a Coors Classic, etc. BTW, Roy was also national champion on the bike in 1953. --Bruce Hildenbrand
