Military training doesn't fade away

Brdo, near Vitez, Bosnia

Once you've heard a sergeant scream "clean your weapon!" enough times it becomes automatic. These two men were making sure their AK-47s were spotless even though nobody was telling them to. They were putting in their time on the front line at Brdo, up the mountain from Vitez.

Derek, Most of the AKs on the Croatian and Bosnia side were imports, most commonly from Romania. If you saw one of the excellent Kragujevac AKs, known locally as a "ciganka," it was captured from the JNA or the Serbian paramilitaries. One Serbian fighter told me the Russian AK was the best, then the Serbian. I met Serbian Chetniks in a town outside Vukovar and one old guy with a Thompson .45 machine gun told me the Thompson was the best combat weapon ever. Jugoslavia got a lot of them from the USA in the late 40s.
