I've never smoked, but in a war it's obvious that nicotine is a useful drug. Anybody under stress craves it. The price of cigarettes goes sky high when the going gets nasty. I know some photographers, such as Chris Morris, who smoke in combat but not otherwise. Kurt was a non-smoker and a vegetarian. The restaurant staff at the Holiday Inn in Sarajevo did an admirable job in making sure that Kurt was properly nourished, despite the lack of variation in available food.
