Purdue University & Lafayette, Indiana

A Mid-Western town, occupying both the banks of the Wabash River, Lafayette is split into Lafayette
and West Lafayette. Lafayette was the site for the first official air mail flight by the United
States Postal Service when in August of 1859, Professor John Wise and his balloon, the Jupiter, took off with a mail pouch including 123 letters and 23 circulars, and though wind blew him off his course, the flight was still officially recognized.

Across the river, in 1822, James Suit settled down in Wabash Township where West Lafayette is now
located. One of the earliest settlements in the West Lafayette village area was Jacktown. Lafayette and West Lafayette, continued to grow and in 1869, Purdue University was founded.

Purdue University, home of the astronauts, opened for classes in 1874. It had, at that time, a
faculty of six, 46 students, a 100-acre farm and five buildings. The buildings were Ladies Hall and
Purdue Hall, both dormitories, a small brick building used for engineering and technical classes,
power plant, a frame gymnasium and armory. University Hall was dedicated in 1877. Purdue is a land
grant college that was created under the Morrill Act. However, John Purdue was able to secure the
site of the college after he pledged $150,000 of his own money, obtained another $50,000 in pledges from other prominent citizens and donated 100 acres of land. The university was named in his honor.

The area around Lafayette is also a strong manufacturing base. Alcoa, Caterpillar, Wabash National, Subaru and Eli and Company are but a few of the industries here. Lafayette is also the home of Axl Rose, Sydney Pollack and Charlton Heston and the list of astronauts includes Neil Armstrong, Jerry L. Ross, and Eugene Cernan among many others.

Lafayette is less than 3 hours from Chicago and is an easy drive through I-90 and I-65. Downtown
is quaint and well maintained. There are plenty of restaurants and typical college town coffee
shops, and on the weekends, the watering holes fill up with students. This town should definitely
be on the list for stop overs on a road trip across Mid-West America.
