Dharapuram - Tamil Nadu

Dharapuram, a name given to it by the British, has through history seen its share of rulers
and owners and today is part of the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. It is a quaint village, most
popular for the Hanuman temple. It is about 2 hours drive from Coimbatore, on the Madurai
route and the drive itself is picturesque with coconut trees and windmills sharing space
besides the road.

Every year in May, a festival is held at the temple, where thousands throng to be one of the
chosen few to pull the chariot, holding the idol, through the village. The temple also serves as
the community center providing free food to many in the area. The temple is also unique in that
the sanctum containing the idol is open to the skies unlike the other temples.

Dharapuram is shielded by the Kodaikanal hills on one side and the Amaravathy river, a tributary of
the Cauvery, on the other. There are numerous picnic spots nearby, enough to make worthwhile,
a day trip from Coimbatore.

I am very happy to see the website about my loveliest native place Dharapuram. I was born and brought up at Dharapuram. My loveliest parents Mr.D.Sethuraman and Mrs Parvatham. I and my brothers and sisters are really missing Dharapuram. Now i am working as an accounts officer in a state government office at Chennai.From My father!upto us we were finished our schooling at valaiyakara school and then board high school Dharapuram. The first initial 'D' stands for "Dharapuram", where I studied from fifth class to SSLC in the Board High School. I am now 72 years old. Dr. Sathynarayanan of Coimbatore is a very good friend of mine. His sisters were studious. My maternal uncle is D.V. Nagaraja Rao.His younger brother was also my class amte, who is now no more. His eldest daughter. Parimala is married to my brother's son. Mrs. Hanumantha rao and the three children including Parimala are in Chennai, as my neighbours in the same apartment.Neer Maniakarar is also related to me throughy my wife. Raghavendran studied with me. I have met his younger brother, Krishnan. After my Engineering and PGDM at IIMA, I have completed fifty years of my engineering life. I have retires as a Professor and also a Member of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission. Dharapuram can boast of its educational talent and skills. Two have studied in IIMA, the other is Late G. Venkatraman, son of Dr. Gokarnesan, who retired as a Directpor of National thermal Power Corporation. Let me stop with this small intro. I have been stayed in Lodge i forgot the name (some alphabet AK or MK) and looking after earlier company exports nearby (Mosque) also the name of the spot called some old Mahal. Also i am very close some of the friends there at that time especially Sakthi Sweets, TVS Parcel Service nearby tea shops & hotels. But i need to go there to see all places & persons if available. Hi, I was born in Dharapuram and currently live in San Jose, CA, USA. My grandmother's (Tara Bai) house was in 77 Hanumanthapuram. Until 1973 or 74, I was visiting the town from Bangalore during the summer holidays. My mother, Sarojini, passed away in Bangalore last month. I want to visit Dharapuram later this year (December) as a way to connect with my own past and to meet a few old friends (Mr. Mohan, a family friend, still lives in Kolinjivadi, across the river, I think). Dharapuram is my native place.My parents (no more) are D.S.Sethuraja Rao & Saraswathi. Address 42 Hanumanthapuram near Hanumar Temple. My father was Village Munsiff (Land Tax Collector)also known as Maniayakar. Three sisters Saroja, Janaki, Kamala. We are five brothers viz. Raghavendran (Raghu), Krishnan, Sudhi (myself), Ramoorthy & Murali. I studied in Board High School from 1955 to 1961. Kanakupillai Nagarajan was our best family friend. Nagaraj Rao was our family document writer ever since early 1940's(we call him "kannaku pillai" Nagaraj Rao was always honorable than any other document writer in Dharapuram at that time) who wrote all of our family properties with my Uncle A.D. Tirupthi who was the Chairman for the Dpm Urban Bank and your other uncle worked under him in the same bank. I know them very well and I used to play in your uncle wonderful large outside "thinn-nai" where he always works with a very small tilted study bench). If you meet your younger uncle tell him, that Dr. Parthasarathy, USA said hello. That is the way they know me. I know he has a daughter and was wondering what she is doing now. She is little older than my daughter. Surprised to see you were in Louisville, as I am the pooja chairman for this temple and we only built this wonderful temple. Dr. Ranga N. Parthasarathy (Spelling Corrected) Dear Jothi Karthik: It was so nice to see my birthplace after many decades with fondest memories still ringing in my ears. I came to USA almost 30 years ago and I still sorely miss my home town, Dharapuram. I grew up when the municipal office, every evening, light the oil-based street lights in Cloth Bazaar Street near "Chethu Chettiar Shop". We studied under those lights and walk to Government High School in 1960's after every day visit to Srikaadu Hanuman Temple. In these school years and earlier, my uncle served as a Head Master who got his BA degree in 1920's from the Madras University (they always call him as "BA Naidu" as he was the first BA in the whole of Dharapuram town). I still have my mother living in Cloth Bazaar Street and own some properties in Big Bazaar street, residual remnant of my life. I am one of the share holders of the famous old Marriage Halls in Cholakkadai Street (Ramasamy Kalyana Mandapams and Sri Ramanujar Temple behind them) and Alagar Mandapam before Ramarayar Mohini Avataram Mandapam in Madurai, where my grand fathers hailed from Vadugapatti Jamin, sold most of their properties there and settled down in Dharapuram, many generations ago. The earliest one was my 9th grand father who established a charitable fund for all these properties in Dharapuram owning almost 25% area of Dharapuram square. My daughter, Dr. Supraja Parthasarathy, MD, who recently made a genealogical tree for almost 10 generations of my parents from Dharapuram and from Madurai. Hope my son Babu Parthasarathy and my daughter, Supraja will do some good things for Dharapuram in their life time in decades to come. Last week, we gave some donation to the famous Mariamman Temple in Vaannier Street near Raja Vaikkal for second Kumbabishegam/Kudamulluku, my mother loves this temple for some reason!!!. In my experience and humble perspective, Dharapuram is a very fine holy small town, intertwined with unique cultural and atypical moral values tied to a small circle which will possibly shape an individual born there with lots of belief on their roots. Excepting a remnant feeling that this town is still deprived of railways but still evergreen in lands (but getting surprisingly water shortage), I love my home town for eternity. If anybody in US need any assistance or some service it is always my proud privilege to anybody, he or she can contact me as I was the Pooja Chairman for Our Well Organized Hindu Temple of Kentucky and the President for Tamil Association in Kentucky, USA. I have already visited this link and see my beloved town dharapuram. I am very proud to be a dharapurathan. Even though it is slowly developing with more traffic, the charm and pleasant climate is still there. Next time pls take the photo of the park road and upload. Dharapuram will be at its best during Dec-Jan every year in the early morning.

Nostalgia grips me as I review these pictures. Rekindling fond childhood memories and unforgettable times I spent every summer vacation visiting my uncle and aunt. The picture "Dharapuram Village" in the collection is very special to me as the house that is nearer in the row is my Uncle's house!! Thanks for your efforts and gesture in sharing these pictures
