1960 DeSoto Fireflite Four Door Sedan. DeSotos were available in three body styles in two series. The Fireflite series was introduced in 1955 as DeSoto's premium, most luxurious series. In 1960, the Adventurer ceased to be DeSoto's high performance specialty entry and replaced Fireflite as DeSoto's top of the line series. The blue Fireflite sedan shown in Ken's photgraph was the best selling DeSoto for model year 1960, but even at $ 3,017, sold less than 10,000 copies in a very dismal sales year for DeSoto. The 1960 DeSoto featured all new "unibody construction", a trapezoidal grille and new higher fins, housing boomerang-shaped taillights. But DeSoto's styling was no longer distinctive and unique. It had become nothing more than a Chrysler fraternal twin, sharing much of the Chrysler Windsor's styling and 122 inch wheelbase. The standard DeSoto Fireflite engine was a 361 cubic inch V-8 developing 295 horsepower. Sadly, the end was near for this once proud Chrysler marque. 1961 would be the last model year for DeSoto, and only a little over 3,000 units were sold before production ceased.
