Once East Prussia's great seaport and fortress town of Memel, Klaipėda became Lithuania's principal port in 1923. Battered in World War II, it retains little of its former self, but with a relaxed atmosphere and good transport connections it serves as a great base for exploring the coast and neighboring Curonian Spit.
