The oldest extant castle in the country (dating from 1537, though an earlier construction was built in 1440), tiny Inuyama-jō was stripped of its fortifications in 1871 during the Meiji Restoration. Until early 2005, it was the only castle in Japan owned by a private family (the Naruse family, retainers of the Matsudaira clan).
