Kishiwada-jō 岸和田城

Kishiwada, Ōsaka-fu, Japan view map

Established in 1585 by Hidemasa Koide, Kishiwada Castle (also known as Chikiri-jō) was built on the site of a fortress dating from the 1300s. Expanded under the Matsudaira in the early 1600s, it went on to become the property of the Okabe family, who controlled it until the Meiji Restoration. A lightning strike burned down the five-storied donjon in 1827, and the castle was later abandoned from 1871. The current, three-storey tower was rebuilt in reinforced concrete in 1954, with the castle walls and turrets restored in 1969.
