Founded as Asakura Castle in the Sengoku (Warring States) era, Yokote-jō was originally built by Ono Derashi. Held by the Satake Clan through the Edo period, it was attacked and burned in 1868 during the Boshin War, with its grounds converted to a park in 1871. The four-storey "donjon" pictured was built in 1965 as an observatory and historical museum, although it is not modeled after the original castle.
