Built in 1590 by Ikoma Chikamasa, Takamatsu-jō (also known as Tamamo-jō) was one of Japan's few feudal castles set against (and protected by) the seaside. Along with many other castles across the country, it was dismantled after the Meiji Restoration, with its central keep torn down in 1884. Although Takamatsu saw considerable bombing damage during World War II, two of the original towers survived and were designated Important Cultural Assets in 1950. An effort to rebuild the five-story donjon is now ongoing, with construction set to commence in 2010.
