Gjirokastra

A symphony of grey and white stone capped with a stern citadel, the UNESCO-listed old town of Gjirokastra sits precariously on a dramatic hillside in Albania's southern Gjerë Mountains. A former stronghold of Greek culture in the country, it is also famous as the birthplace of Enver Hoxha, Albania's paranoid Communist-era dictator.
