In 1982 Frank Sanders was flying a Sea Fury as a chase plane during flight-testing of a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 powered Corsair. As the power was put to the Corsair, it simply walked away from Frank in his Sea Fury. That gave Frank and idea; why can't he put an R-4360 in a Sea Fury. In 1986 Frank Sander's R-4360 powered Sea Fury, Dreadnought, was at the Reno Air Races walking away from the competition and winning the championship. The larger, more-powerful engine necessitated a larger tail but the resulting aircraft is truly phenomenal. Now raced by Frank's sons, Brian and Dennis, Dreadnought is one of the most consistent racers around the track. It is not the fastest, but to win you have to get around it. Wondering what goes on in that R-4360 while racing at Reno? Click for a glimpse of just one second.
