It’s the fastest sport in the world but you probably have never heard of it. You don’t know that it is the only sport where competitors streak 50 feet over the ground traveling in excess of 500 mph. Add eight other aircraft around the course at the same time all vying for the top spot, and you have Air Racing. As if that were not enough, factor in that some of these aircraft are over 60 years old, powered by engines that were designed over 70 years ago; all far exceeding their design limits. Yet they are still the fastest piston-powered aircraft ever. There is one more element to this experience and that is the people. Not just the pilots or the crews, but the fans too; all those titles have some degree of interchangeability. No where else will you see crews working through the night to help a competitor, so they will have a fair shot a beating that competitor the next day. Borrowed engines, borrowed propellers, borrowed rudders, borrowed crews; it's all part of the camaraderie of this unique isolated world. To those who participate, it never was really a sport; it’s a way to live. So if you are interested in aviation, competition, racing, or having fun, visit Reno, Nevada in September. That’s the only place where you can witness Air Racing for yourself and become addicted like the rest.
