Wood Duck Maker: Joseph Lincoln ca. 1925

Joseph Whiting Lincoln 1859-1938
Accord, Massachusetts

Joseph Lincoln would probably be described today as a "minimalist". His decoys were smooth and free of excessive touches. Simplicity itself!

Born in Accord, MA he started to carve decoys in his teens because he could not afford to buy them. He lived across the street from Accord Pond,
where hunting was readily accessible. It was a way of life!

Lincoln probably learned many of his woodworking skills from his father, who was a cooper. Joe only used hand tools, such as, a drawknife, an axe and a hatchet to create his decoys. All of his decoys were painted outside under the trees, summer through winter. Joe worked as a watchmaker, repairing clocks and also in various shoe factories until he gave them up to carve decoys full time. Joe's natural artistic ability made him one of the best decoy carvers of his time.
