before and after...

This is an example of yet another "order-out-of-chaos" day with my friend Pat. Our task today was my collection of CDs. I know your next question and the answer is "No, I have not gotten into the iPod, iPhone, i-anything world...except my iBook, that is." I'm counter-cultural I know, but I dislike wearing earphones that close me off from the world around me. Anyway, my CDs were so disorganized that I had no idea what was there. But not any more! Not only are they all in one place, but they're even shelved according to the following styles of music: jazz, experimental, women's music, world music, new age, spoken word, vocals (both individual & group), classical, pop/folk and soundtracks. Looking at these CDs was like looking at my life over the past 10-15 years. Each one carries memories, often of live performances I've seen and heard. Sorry, my friends, but ipods will never bring back memories like CDs. I doubt if you'll remember where you were and what was going on in your life when you downloaded a song off iTunes. It just isn't the same as buying a CD directly from the musician or at one of his/her/their concerts. So now I feel like I have a new world of sound to explore, the world I already knew but had forgotten. Such abundance!

By the way, I've added three new images to my Masked Winter Woman gallery. CLICK HERE to see them.

Harddrives are so inexpensive these days. I bought one just for my music and out went that whole pile of plastic. So satisfying to be rid of it.

Is Pat available to help me with mine? I too do not own an I-pod or I-phone....don't feel I need one. I still have vinyl albums too. Will never give them up! I like the pics you hung up! Perfect spot for them!

Over the weekend, I saw a television news story about a few companies bringing back vinyl records. They say sound cannot be reproduced as well digitally as it is on vinyl. Personally, I can't tell the difference; but apparently there are people out there who can.

I am in the process of putting all of my CD's on a digital hard-drive for my home music system and on an iPod for automobile and boat travel. It is amazing to me that all of my music can travel with me where ever I go. I still have to store the CD's somewhere at home though.

Your new organized collection looks great beneath those two wonderful photos.

Reading your comments about CD's made me think about it for a bit..

I used to be the kind of person who read every single liner note. Every scrap of info in a new album. I'm old enough to remember 8-track tapes...then I was into records, the cassettes...then CD's. I have BOXES and BOXES of them in the attic still at my parents house (I moved out 21 years ago) and here in my own home, I have tons of CD's in the basement. All of them converted to digial files and now on my computer and iPod. I haven't bought a CD in years. I only buy files on the internet. I share music with friends that way too. I don't miss the plastic packaging, at all. All that waste that I had to throw out when I converted my CD's....YES, you can recycle plastic, but for me, the digital files create NO waste at all.

I don't feel that I'm missing any memories for having bought digital files, for me, the memories are in the music and the lyrics.

I realise now that the kids who are turning 21 this year, and voting, didn't grow up with CD's (or records, or cassettes or 8-tracks) Their memories ARE from the music on their iPods.

I am still a CD person too, and what can look like a big stack to other is indeed a very organized series of CD in my CD closet.
