MY NETSUKE & OKIMONO COLLECTION

Netsuke (pronounced "NETS KAY")are tiny Japanese carvings inthe round which were used by Japanese gentlemen as the toggle to attach small pouches etc to their Kimono belts. Kimonos did not have pockets.
These small carvings cover a multitude of subjects and materials and are approximately 2"(5cm) in size.
They can be inexpensive(now mass produced as reproductions) or very expensive for rare ones.(An 18th Century wooden mandarin duck by Masanao sold at Sotherby's in 1984 for Ł48400- the then cost of a house in the UK!!)
Okimono are larger than netsuke and are self standing tho still carved in the round. These are usually quite expensive in the range Ł100+ to Ł5000+. My favourites are the old ivory Okimono.

Hi Tom You asked about your recently acquired collection and where you could find out more about it. The International Netsuke Society website is where you should go but they do not give valuations. Nice Collection. I have inheritetd a collection Netsuke and Okimono. There are 82 pieces, mostly made of ivory, but also wood, walnut, whale tooth. Since I am not a collector of these things, I'd like to sell the collection. Is there a forum or a market? Tom

Hi Wes, A few years ago I purchased a rosewood carved figure from adiplomats widow in New Zealand. After seeing your site I now believe it to be an Okimoto. It is310 mm tall and the subject is a very well attired japanese woman holding a flute with a cockeral at her feet.she has an elaborate hairdo (possibly geisha).Both her and the birds eyes appear to be glass .The carving is of a very accomplished standard with incredible detail.I look forward to hearing your insights about its possible history,its age and its value in case I should be insuring this piece.
