Within view of the radar site was a shipwreck grounded on a sand bar, or Glen Island. Glen Island separated the Izembek Lagoon from the Bering Sea. Several of the men went out there at times to explore, but I didn't have the opportunity. However, I did photograph the Courtney Ford from the radar site in the Fall of 1970, just before winter set in. This photo reveals what the shipwreck looked like in real life from the shore. It was barely visible with the naked eye, but could be seen on the horizon. It looked like a small piece of pencil lead.
