Navy Town was a complex of numerous abandoned buildings that had been built during World War II. The buildings connected by the enclosed walkway had included a hospital. Steve and I spent a good part of our camping weekend exploring the hospital while looking for artifacts. One building we discovered was surrounded by barbed wire and guard posts. We were both convinced that the fenced building had been the "brig." However, one of the local residents told us later that it had actually been the nurses' quarters. According to him, there had been twenty-eight nurses and sixteen thousand-eight hundred GIs stationed at Cold Bay. True or not, the story was that the nurses never went anywhere without armed guards. The water in the background is Cold Bay, itself.
