Thomas Haag

The three long-haired boys
Reid and Thomas and (the more I think about it) Marc
[I was remembering the blond one as being another Eric but, looking at a skate trip to the old YMCA pool in the canyon, which I intend to make into a Gallery of its own,I keep seeing the letter "M" on the proof sheets}
These guys seemed to live together in a world of their own. Sometimes they would hook up with us, Reid being Frog"s brother, but they had other means of transportation too. Even back in the day I was kicking myself for not having a picture of the three of them together.

I was just a teenager when on a summer holiday back in 1988 I spent an evening in a little Paris restaurant in the company of Thomas, actor/skater Robert Rusler ("Hook" from the 1986 movie "Trashin'"), the late Gerry "Skatemaster Tate" Hurtado and Xavier Lannes (former French pro skater and then owner of "The Surf Factory" skate & surf shop in Paris). At the end of the evening the guys all wrote they autographs on a restaurant receipt (which I still have) so I can confirm to you that the last name of Thomas is definitely spelled Haag and not Haig.

Hey Thomas, sorry to hear about your dad. John certainly was an historical figure, one of the founders of the Peace and Freedom Party and Free Venice Beachead paper. I still have one of those old buttons that says "free venice" with the broken chains, black on green background. I'm sure your mom's givin him hell. I know me and Avery's mom is up there waitin on my dad to die so she can whack him good with a cast iron frying pan. (The image of your mom going after Big Anthony with a huge kitchen knife, chasin him out of lafeyettes will be forever etched on my mind.)

It's definitely Haag. Thomas had a beautiful son last I saw. His dad, John, used to be a Peace and Freedom Party organizer/activist back in the day. His mom, Anna, tragically died of cancer. She was an amazing fiery Italian woman who was an old school Venice artist (as well as local waitress extraordinaire at Jurgens, Lafeyettes, the Firehouse, and other local eateries). Thomas' little sister Duanna married Jimmy Davies.

Anna was one of the most special people I ever met in my entire life. She really looked after many of us Venice kids, including me, when our various supposed parents were in absentia. Her children are awesome too, no surprise.

God bless Anna, may she rest in peace... Peace to all her beautiful family....

PS I'm taking the spelling from Kara's spelling in comments elsewhere on the site...I thought it was Haig, but I never saw it on paper...

In the early days Reid and Marc were flashier skaters, but it didn't matter because they were friends and I don't think it was about competition....plus Thomas was from a distinguished Venice family. His mother, Anna was a waitress at Lafayette's and if that's not Venice royalty, I don't know what is...
