****Stewart and Shane were sharing an apartment on the oceanfront. Shane was a nice guy but something of a poseur party boy and I have to admit that at first I suspected that Stewart's board, propped up in the corner, was pure hodad (look it up in a dictionary of antique slang).
*****John and I met them through Andy and Danny, the gay couple who lived next door to them. Danny was, shall we say, something of a social butterfly and Shane and Stewart came to Andy to warn him about something that they thought he should know. It seems they had noticed that Danny was bringing home a lot of strange guys when Andy was out of town and they thought that Danny might be...........gay!
I should mention that Andy was out of town a lot because he was a flight attendant.....
*****I went back and scanned a few more frames from that first day, I hope Stewart doesn't mind, because they tell a story of the exuberance of just starting out.... The beer, the bong, the tequila, the stereo, the wall hanging, decorations and potted plant, the skis, snow and water standing in opposite corners, even what looks like a cabinet with sports trophies..... An apartment just as it was imagined with a view of the Pacific and a never-ending stream of hot babes right beneath your window.... Shane disappeared from my radar rather quickly, and though I believe Stewart had a difficult year not that long after these were taken, he pulled through it and is still surfing the breakwater...
*****Andy and Danny were just starting out too, but for them it was also nearly the end. I believe Andy was the first guy I ever knew of with AIDS. There was an article in Newsweek about a strange new disease and there was a picture of Andy and his Mother... he had woken up to find a strange purple bruise on his foot. And it would have been better if Danny hadn't looked so studly up in that window ( I remember him as a bit short, but who would know...looking up) I don't think Danny made it to 30, maybe not even 25....
