This is one of the oddities found in the Bird Cage Theatre. In fact, I believe this 'mermaid' showed up in several locations throughout the United States in the 1800's, and is now considered a hoax. The theatre/museum is quite an interesting place to wander through, including both the stage and the rooms beneath the stage. Many of the placards explaining items appear to have been lovingly handwritten many years ago. This was part of the charm of this historical building.
