Nature Reserve and Bird Sanctuary near Knokke on the Belgian-Dutch border.
The Zwin nature reserve stretches along a coast length of approximately 2.3 km in the Dutch-Belgian border area.
Approximately 2 km of this coast length lies on Belgian territory, the rest on Dutch territory.
The nature reserve has a surface of 158 ha of which 125 ha on Belgian and 33 ha on Dutch territory.
It exists from a dune rule with salty swallow and clay.
Along the border a breach in the dune rule of a length of approximately 250 m. results in North marine water penetrating the nature reserve at high tide by means of a "slufter", a gutter which branches off itself in the area in several gutters and smaller creeks.
Where does the name Het Zwin come from? I have a student writing a story about your preserve (she was there and loved it) and she would like to know what it means. Thank you!
