RARA AVIS

April 2007 - Jeremy, Deb, Puppy and I spent a lovely Sunday off-roading up to Rara Avis. Rara Avis is a remote, private rainforest reserve butting up against Braulio Carrillo National Park. The 12 kilometer road from Horquetas(near Puerto Viejo de Sarapaqui) up into the rainforest covered mountains was intense. Baby got stuck twice. The first time Jeremy pushed Baby's rump and that was sufficient. Further up the road Baby's belly bottomed out in mud with her wheels deep in tractor ruts. We lifted Baby up with the hi-lift and stuck logs underneath one of the rear tires. This gave us enough clearance to escape. Rara Avis has a Unimog that makes the road look like a cakewalk. The grand finale of the day was crossing San Rafael River. Water unfortunately seeped in through the doors and Baby became an aquarium. Oops!
