I was the Asst Manager at a Giant Tiger store when Gaylord's bought them. I opened and ran the new Lorain, Ohio Gaylord's. Later, I ran the Cleveland store when the manager was arrested for stealing the full Sunday's receipts after losing a big Kentucky Derby bet to bookies. I also opened the new east-side store. It was a fun ride until I switched to manufacturing and ended up running auto plants in three different countries. If you can run a big-box store, auto plants turn out to be a snap.

I did inventory at Gaylord's in New Castle Pennsylvania in 1970 and 71. They asked the employees to bring their families on inventory day. I was 15-16 years old and my cousin worked there. It was an easy day make some cash.

I worked at the store in Chestnut Hill Plaza in Newark DE, it made the Goodwill Store look like the Sacks 5th Avenue. There were also stores in Wilmington at Centerville Road, Miller Road, and one other....it was a crappy store, 3rd rate merchandise, customers robbing us blind, skeleton crew, (never enough employees hired or scheduled to cover all the departments), incompetent management and even worse corporate execs. Was glad I was only there for slightly less than 2 years. Security guards were a joke, they'd miss TV's and car stereos walking out the front door because they are on their break. Shoplifters had a field day there. I remember employees getting into fist fights with each other on the sales floor, right in front of customers. Some male managers and female employees were having affairs and would F--K in the back office or store room. The food served at the snack bar was not fit for a dog. The barber shop was a joke, they would butcher people's haircuts. Some employees would put on new rollerblades and skate around the store, then put them back when done as if nothing ever happened. Some people would put clothes on layaway then never come back for them. I remember the Great Cabbage Patch Kids riot of 1984. Those ugly dolls were the hot item that year. We had to lock all the doors and let the customers in 3 or 4 at a time, people got impatient and bum rushed the doors, breaking thru. They had to call the state police.

Was there a Gaylord's in both Biloxi and Gulfport, MS? There is a dispute about it on Facebook saying there never was one in Biloxi.

I am trying to find Brenda Jones that worked with me at Gaylords on North Lumpkin Road in Columbus, Ga. in 1971. She was married to Eddie Jones. She was my friend and I would like to reconnect with her.

I remember Gaylords dept. store in Montgomery, AL as I worked there part-time 10th-12th grades. The security guard Tim who was much older than me was the last person at the store. He was always after me to date. There was so much theft going on that the manager of the store threatened to give everyone a lie detector test. Turned out that Tim's sister and aunt who worked the cash registers, were making shopping lists and when their friends came through the check-out lines, they didn't ring up the goods. Yep, that entire family got busted and fired for letting thousands of dollars of goods go out of the store including the security guard Tim who took whatever he wanted when he locked up the store.

My first job was with Gaylords in Gretna, Louisiana in 1979. Absolutely no work experience and I went in as the hardware department manager. This translated to being the ONLY employee in the hardware department, day or night. I learned a lot though because I did it all. To this day I still use many of the skills I picked up there. Ya gotta go to Gaylords with the Go Getem Gator :-)

I remember Gaylords Department Store on North Lumpkin Rd. in Columbus, Ga. I worked there as department manager of sporting goods and toys and Mr. Spitz was the manager who hired me. I even found a few pay stubs in a box in my attic from way back then. They were going to send me off for manager training, but then had to cancel due to their financial situation. I left there and went to work for Howard Brothers, which lasted just a few years longer. Stephen

I lived right behind the gaylords on the atlanta highway in forest hills. I remember when they first started building it and they cleared all the woods out. Who remembers what went in after gaylords? I know the flea market has been there for a while but cant remember if anything went in after gaylords...seems like it was another store kinda like gaylords.

My grandmother worked for the Betty Gay Store in downtown Atlanta from 1965 until about 1969 or 1970. No one seems to remember what street it was located on. I was think Marietta Street, but I don't remember the street name my self!

I was lucky enough to get my first computer programming job with Giant Tigers, Cleveland Ohio, Edsall road, which was purchased by Gaylords. They moved the IT department and HQ to NYC in 1969.. I was hired by Virginia Turner and Larry Layman. Thank you for the great ride. I owe Giant Tigers, Gaylords, Virginia and Larry for giving me a start to a great future.

There were two in Montgomery, AL-one on Atlanta Hwy. and one on the "other" side of town (Southern By-Pass-?). I remember going into K-Mart once and hearing on the overhead speaker/sound system, "ya gotta go to Gaylords". I thought that was awfully ironic!!
Guest 10-May-2011 23:49
I remember one in Panama City, Fla., on 15th Street--at the corner of 15th and Jenks. I bought many many toys there.

Gaylords National Corp (Gaylords Stores) was based in Secaucus NJ and was acquired by Zayre Corp in the early 1980's. They had stores throughout the Eastern and Southern US. Their jingle "Ya gotta go to Gaylords" used to drive me crazy.
They went under because the upper management was penny-wise and dollar-foolish.They were too busy counting their pennies to realize that their dollar bills were flying out the window. They would have less-than skeleton crews on hand to staff their stores and the customers were tired of not having anyone to help them, or wait too long at the registers......and the shoplifters would rob them blind.

After a few years, even Zayre went belly-up, they were bought by Ames...who eventually went under too !!
