Sometimes I'll go for a shot with an interesting effect in mind. Bokeh is a good example, since you can get dramatic and dreamy effects from something sharp in the foreground and a soft creamy background. Other effects might be interesting lighting, a striking effect from a macro shot, a composition that makes you guess at what you're seeing, that kind of thing.
