Hartford, CT

Main St. near Charter Oak Ave. – Crown Theater and Dailey's Supermarket. Date: Early 1950's? When I was eight years old I used to walk about 4 blocks to the Crown Theater
whenever my parents could afford to give me 20¢ for the Saturday Matinee. I remember "The Day The Earth Stood Still", "Creature From The Black Lagoon",
"Commando Cody", "Captain Video", and "The Wizard of Oz". I remember being frustrated because my parents would not let me see "War of the Worlds".

7/21/14 – How times have changed. I just read about a woman who was arrested for allowing her 9 year old daughter to go to the park alone!!!

I guess my parents would have been arrested for allowing me to walk 5 blocks to school, or 6 blocks to the local library, or allowing me to eat Popsicles and Twinkies.
I might have been arrested for carrying my Roy Rogers cap gun without a permit.
And what about us kids getting caught playing tag with each other, or red rover, or dodge ball, or . . . hide and seek???
Or, even worse, what would happen if they found out we were using our imagination while we listened to
and enjoyed radio shows like The Lone Ranger, Tarzan, Johnny Dollar, Gangbusters, or The Shadow?
