Paid | $15 | History / Provenance | Purchased on eBay from seller in Ft. Smith, AR. This bowl that belonged to a neighbor's grandfather. Grand-dad built adobe homes in Arizona and then in New Mexico around 1900. He also collected a number of indian items. The buff color argues for SW Arizona. The shape, and the rolled out lip says Zuni. The temper looks like sherds. It is clearly hand-coiled, but unslipped or polished. It was just smoothed with a scraper and fingers. You can see the scratches from the tool that was used and even figerprints. I think this was made by someone's grandmother as a utilitarian piece. It was clearly not intended for railroad or roadside tourists. It is a nice size to hold in your hand, its heavy and cool to the touch. I can see this being used as a water drinking vessel. It is very soft, so it may not have been fired--just dried. If someone sees this and knows where it was made please let me know. |
