it is 240-meter long and is used by ships since 1999.
It replaced two original wooden piers crushed by ice masses in the winters of 1929 and 1941/42 that were only partially rebuilt.
During East German times, the use of the piers by regular boats were stopped in 1961 when the Berlin Wall was built, because it was relatively easy to escape to West Germany from here.
