It's the Tower of Light sponsored by a national conglomeration of electric utilities. The building is constructed of some 600 aluminum forms with, as you said, an ever changing pattern of lights. However, the main event was a searchlight that emanated from the center upwards and could be seen for miles and miles.

The future looked so much more glamorous back then. Of coutrse as it turned out, we didn't know a lot about the present at the time...and I had yet to learn much about history, either. Just goes to show you...photography is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Works pretty well, too! I enjoy these shots of the NYWF very much. With my grandmother, all we have are a collection of me and my brother standing in front of entrances to this or bridges to that. It's a good thing to remember when taking family photos---years later we hunger to remember the places as well as the people.
