Nathan Road, Kowloon

Hong Kong

... as I recall, Nathan Road was the main shopping street at that time on Kowloon and was fronted by several hotels, restaurants, and shops of all kinds. If my memory is wrong, let me know ...

WOW!!! I am currently working on a scrapbook of prints I made of my dad's old navy slides (1962-1966) & your album is nearly identical to my dad's!! Many of his slides were from Hong Kong & he has a near identical photo from Nathan Road!! It looks like he took his from the sidewalk to the left & he was stopped maybe 50 yards farther back. His scrapbook is to be a surprise xmas present, so I can't ask about the places in the photos yet. (He doesn't even know I have them in prints.) I was afraid I was going to have to guess about where some pics were from, hope I placed the right ones together, and fill in the descriptions after xmas when he could tell me the info. This is exciting to find so much info on near identical photos!! He will be shocked that I now have better descriptions than simply Hong Kong to include. Thanks for posting your pics. They are fabulous & have been EXTREMELY helpful to me!! Without even knowing it, you have helped to make my dad's xmas even better! Thanks again.

Nathan Road, the road I walk everyday :) If you visit Hong Kong again, I am glad to be your guide!

Shopping streets in Hong Kong will soon be a thing of the past. The Urban Renewal authority buys up whole streets, demolishes them, and puts up another shopping mall with super-high-rise towers on top. It's just happened with 'Wedding Card Street' in Wan Chai and it will soon happen to 'Sneaker Street' in Mong Kok and Graham Street Market in Central. It's gone too far, now - even if the planning process began to change today, street-level shopping will be gone by the time government changes its ways. Nathan Road will soon only be used by cars - all the shoppers will be moving through interconnected airconditioned malls. the worst thing is, I can't really blame them - I may think bustling streest are picturesque and make Hong Kong what it is (was?), but most people I know hate the crowding, the heat, the noise and the smell and would much rather hang out in a shiny new mall ... :-(

on the left 2nd (building) you can still see the president hotel, then renamed as the hong kong hyatt, then the hyatt regency and was bulldozed last year!!!
on the right (sculptured windows) is the imperial hotel, and behind, the infamous chungking mansions - a story unto itself at any time over these last decades!!

Daniel, Nathan Road runs from Tsim Sha Tsui (the tip of Kowloon Pennisula) thru MongKok. Therefore, both you and Tom are correct. Over the years, much of the population has also moved to suburban areas, especially in the New Territories. The prominance of Nathan Road as a main shopping area has been diminished.
Tom, thanks for sharing these wonderful historic pictures.

Your memory it's good,,, and Nathan busy road it's still alive, Many shops, restaurants, jewlry shops, everything around there... About being the main shopping area.. Im not pretty sure, I think today's busiest place would be MongKok.
