Hovenweep - A hidden gem

I just loved this place, there is an absolute magic about it to my mind. It was a magic I wasn’t expecting. On our way to Bluff we thought we would take a detour to have a look at the Hovenweep National Monument. It didn’t look promising at first as a very lengthy detour through some flat uninspiring countryside went on and on, and we started to wonder if it would be like one of those monuments we sometimes have in the UK that are ‘bigged up’ you get there and there is an old wire fence around a crumbling tower! How wrong we were. What a hidden gem it is. It really fired my imagination in so many ways. This was maybe helped by the fact that my son and I were the only people there apart from the ranger in the entrance exhibition. Yes I Monument Valley was excellent , as was Bryce and Arches but this place is special in a whole different way.
So the history - the towers of Hovenweep were built by ancestral Puebloans, a sedentary farming culture that occupied the Four Corners area from about A.D. 500 to A.D. 1300. To get the full story check the link below
