Roxane Tyssen 28-Mar-2021 20:56
I just found this link when looking for some additional information regarding the US Army in Buedingen.

I am writing to you as the secretary of the Sister Cities Commission in Tinley Park, IL. We recently celebrated our 30-year friendship/partnership with Buedingen in December of 2019.

BG Patrick Rea, Ret. is our current chairman and was a key player in creating the sister city relationship now over 30 years ago.

Please reach out to us if you find yourself in the south west suburbs of Chicago. We also have a FB page if you would like to share your story, add some of your photos, or make any other comment.

Best,

Roxane Tyssen

I was in D troop 3/12 in the Tank section.I was in Graf. when an arty. round landed in in our supply tent.My room mate and good friend Augie Saurino and 15 other,s were killed. The only reason it did not get me was I had gone up with the advance party and pulled guard duty that night.I got in my fart sack and pulled the flap over my head. the guy Iwas on guard duty wtih J.C. Parker just lay on top of his. A Sgt. saw him and told him to turn his weapon in to the arms tent. He was there when the round hit and was killed.

Tim:
I was stationed in Budingen from 1972 to 1976. I knew your mom and dad (Ted and Wanda) very well. We had a lot of great times at the officers club and on post party's. They were a special couple. I did get chance to catch up with them once in El Paso in the 80's. Hope you are doing well and I love your pictures>

While stationed with the Signal company in Frankfurt the General asked me to build the 1/4 mile Dirt Race Track. We worked a long time to get it going and had a blast for years before I rotated back to CONUS. Would like to hear from someone that raced there in the 70's. My car was Blue with number 69 and I ended up being the Track Marshal. A Life Insurance Company Agent sponsored the Trophies. Hope all are still alive and well. My name is Lee Lawley

Made some friends for LIFE. I still in touch with some of my old army buddies from Budingen. Never forget our summer excecises Firing Mision in Crete, Greece. I was stationed in Buedingen from 1973-77 assigned to C Btry 3/61 ADA. I always enjoyed the good times and have forgotten freezing my fingers in the 3/61 trackpark on guard duty in the middle of the winter and doing crew drills in preparation for the annual Crete trips. The good times were very good and the rest is history. I stayed in the Army after I left Buedingen and retired as a Sgt Major im 1997. I now live in Huntsville AL, and always have my keepsake from Buedingen with me My Bride of 34 years, who I met in Lorbach at a bierfest. Life is good and if anyone from the old days reads this and remembers me feel free to contact me at weschreyer@knology.net

During the time I was assigned to C Troop 3/12 Cav (October '66 to March '69), I took a few movies - super 8 - and would like to contact the city to see if they would be interested in a copy of them. I was hoping you or perhaps a visitor could help me contact some official of the city or historical organization.

If anyone recalls me or served during this time, I would like to hear from you.

I was the German librarian at Armstrong Barracks from 1951 to 1954. The 517th Armd FA Bn had just moved there from Wetzlar after construction work was completed on the damaged buildings during WWII. In fact, I moved the library to the Special Services Country Club location from one small room over the mess hall. I still have the newspaper clipping from 1951 “8th Regiment Gets New Library”. In reading all of the comments, I may be the only person dating back to the early 50’s. There were only a few German young ladies working at Armstrong in those days and it was quite an adventure for a 20 year old to be surrounded by hundred of GI’s. The library was like a meeting place for many GI’s who had no place to go. I still remember many of the wonderful people I met during those years. I may not remember their names, but I do remember their faces and I have many photos from those days.

I remember all the Service Club ladies and Sgt. Jennings who was in charge of the Bowling alley and Movie Theater. He let me sneak into the theater to watch all those wonderful American movies. One of my regular visitors at the library was Chaplain Charles L. Burgreen who wrote the Chaplain’s Corner. He became my mentor and good friend. I have a signed letter of recommendation dated 1952 from Lt. Col. William R. Bond; Commanding 2nd BN, 8th Infantry Regiment. I guess I always did well passing all the IG inspections! I remember many of the drivers who drove me to Gelnhausen or Hanau to pick up books and magazines. It was very exciting for a German national in those days to get those special privileges. However, even the covered jeeps were really cold in the winter months.

Timothy, your photos of this romantic town are absolutely wonderful. I translated some of the Büdingen history into a small booklet for the Service Club patrons who were interested. I have wonderful memories of Büdingen and the people. I lived on Düdelsheimer Strasse 3 until the “Gut Stub” opened there and my quite room became too noisy. I last visited Büdingen and the Armstrong Barracks Library in 1995. It was really fun to meet the librarian at that time and sit behind the desk.

If you were stationed at Armstrong Barracks between 1951 and 1954, my name was Linda Wild and my email address is hermelinde@aol.com or lsmith@tipsgroup.com.

I was Diane Keller. My ex-husband Henry Keller (Buddy), was stationed in Budingen from Oct. 66 to May 68. I was there also. He was in 3rd Squad.12th Cav. Headquarter Troop. He was the sedan driver for the commander and Wayne Cole was the jeep driver. One of the commanders was Col. Fuller and there was also another one. We lived off base on Auf der Buende Strasse #14. We were friends with Carl & Nancy Sheets, (Carl was a medic). Lyndon Zaner, John Dubil, Bonnie & Donnie Dietz and many others whose names I can't think of. Many of them hung out a place called The Gut Stuben and it was run by a woman named Lena. We had some wonderful times in Budingen and many sweet memories. I was 22 and Buddy was 20.

Does anyone know how to contact Kameron (maybe spelled Cameron, Camron, Kamron?) Brown?

She was raised in Budingen, GE, had a German mom and American dad, and spoke fluent German and English (no german accent); her american dad I believe lived in Houston, TX area; her age would now be around 39 to 44 years old; she lived with her German Grandmother and younger Brother in Budingen near that big rock formation (cannot remember its name?); she did attend the American Univerity of Maryland in Munich, GE around 1983 to 1986 time frame.

She was like a little sister to me in the early 1980's (1981 to 1984) and I would like to recontact her to see how she is doing in life. So if anyone can get me in contact with her it would be greatly appreciated.

By the way I was in Budingen from 1981 to 1984 in C Troop 3/12 Cav, and anyone that wishes to contact me, please feel free to do so at my email: warrenuny@juno.com

Hey Tim,
I visited your beautiful web site this morning.
Awesome photography.
I enjoy working with you.
John Baker 18-Mar-2008 16:24
Dear Sir,

I was moved by the photos that you have posted here. I am a photographer in Fort Worth and have often caught myself stopping by area cemeterys and taking photographs. I am not sure if you are familiar with Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, but they have an awesome display of various Biblical statues as well as the ones provided by the families of those in rest.

Take care and God bless!
Carrie Paige Smith 09-Jan-2008 05:59
Dear Tim: The marvelous pictures of the memorial at the cemetery of Freed slaves is sincerely appreciated. I have visited the site, and been moved by the part of my history it represents. I believe those souls that these sculptures represent must be praying and rejoicing at any and every moment of progress uniting the world in a common understanding of that all of earth's inhabitants are the children of one God. I only wish duplicates of these dignified statues were available for purchas and placement in other locations. They teach not only how much was suffered but how dignified were our ancesters, how much has been achieved, and how much the future holds for us. Thank you, and God bless you.

Tim - in seeking out the weeping angel in the Grove Hill Cemetery, I have come across your website. I have relatives buried in this cemetery, have admired this gravestone for years and am seeking to obtain a photograph. I called the cemetery, but am told they do not have photos, was told I certainly could take a photo for myself....I note you've had this request numerous times and am also interested in having a photo. Do you have different shots of varying views of this angel? I am definitely interested; your photos are excellent. MCG

timothy, i have looked at your website, particularly the graveyard photos, and am very impressed. i have question, if you could help. i may desire to sell some of my tombstone and statuary photos someday to magazines and such. since you and i are in texas, would you know if legally i have to inform each cemetery where the objects are that i have sold a photo? do i owe them a fee? i have photographed at greenwood cemetery, dallas, and oakland, dallas, and received permission to photograph in both places but at those times i did not state my desire to sell these photos someday to a magazine and such. i may never do so, but do you have any information or suggestions as to how i should proceed? thank you so much for your help.

I would like to purchase a print of the weeping angels. Do you sell them?
Thanks,
Chris

I have long had pictures of the weeping angel from another cemetary. Although she looks like this one, she is in a monument in Metarie Cemetary in Metarie, La. A few months ago I was driving past a little cemetary in Denison, Texas...and there she was again. I am a lover of cemetaries and will drive or walk through just to see what is there. This monument continues to be the most compelling I have seen.

Love the weeping angel photos. Is it possible to purchase a print?

After reading the article about cemetery angels in the Providence Journal (01/15/05) I wondered if you have ever visited the Hope Cemetery in Barre, Vermont? You will find some amazing monuments to the lives of the people buried there-well worth a visit if you are ever in the area. Barre has its own granite and marble quarries which probably makes it easier to afford the material for some very unique, beautiful and elaborate monuments.

I saw the article on your photography in the Lexington KY Herald Leader. I was very interested in your photography in cemetaries and decided to check out your website. Also enjoyed your photos of classic cars and the Museum of Modern Art in Dallas. I worked at the San Francisco Mus of Modern Art another great museum with great architecture by Mario Botta. As a photographer I always learn something from other photographers. Enjoyed your website.

i loved your photographs, thank you for sharing them! may i ask what kind of camera and/or special equiptment you use? i would also like to know about infared. i heard of two books from other websites, but any other info would be useful. i am also very interested in cemetaries, angels, sculpture, photography, etc. i have taken some photos at cemetaries in my area (massachusetts) and in europe. any info from anyone about photographing, infared, and photography on tombstones (pictures taken after death--my own morbid facination) would be appreciated. there is also a local organization here that has a great website, it is www.gravestonestudies.org. thanks--and keep up the wonderful photos!

I became infatuated with your photo of the weeping angel/angel of grief statue and have searched the internet for more information. It appears there are replicas in cemeteries in Colma, California and Stanford, California as well. I have photos, email me if you would like me to send them to you.

I saw your photo of the weeping angel in our local paper. I have actually been searching for a reproduction of the statue since I saw her during my uncle's funeral in Hayward CA, 15 years ago, where she greets you at the entrance. Thank you for sharing her image with others so she may touch them also.

Dear Mr. Boss - Thanks for a lovely gallery! Loved all of it. I found myself wondering if you have seen/read "Beautiful Death - Art of the Cemetary" by David Robinson and Dean Koontz? This is a beautifully done coffee table size book of excellent photos of the art work - sculpture mainly - of the great cemetaries of Europe. It includes Pere Lachaise and Montmartre in Paris and other major cemetaries throughout Europe. If you haven't seen the book, I checked and found that Amazon has several copies available. Thanks again for your beauutiful gallery and Happy New Year! SFS

I saw your article about cemetery angeles. There is a beautiful weeping angel in the Union City, Ca cemetery on Mission Blvd. You can see her from the road. If you ever come out here, I think that you would like this one. It really affected me.

HI Tim...after reading the article about your pictures in the Indianapolis Star, of course, I had to view your photos and they were spectacular! I, too, love old cemetaries and their markers. I am an amateur photographer, but am learning and thanks to people like you, I can really appreciate what can be done with a camera and a lens. Hard work and a great eye for detail!
I also want to invite you to come take pictures in one of the largest cemetaries in the U.S. It is right here in Indy and is called "Crown Hill Cemetary." It has famous and infamous people buried here such as....President Benjamine Harrison, Poet James Whitcomb Riley and........ gangster John Dillinger as well as beautiful and unusual angels and other markers. So, come on up and take in the view....especially lovely in the spring.
Thanks, again, for such lovely pics.

Saw the article about the weeping angel and thought you'd like to know about a statue in the Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Texas--Jesus in cowboy boots. Don't remember where it is located, but it is well-known locally so you shouldn't have trouble getting directions if you're interested in visiting.

I enjoyed the article in the Herald Leader, Lexington, Ky about your angel statue photos. I understand your interest in the angels, I feel so strongly drawn to the angel statues (and believe we all have angels around us) that if it were possible, I would have my daughters' remains transferred to a cemetry that would allow me to put up a statue of an angel. Heard about you in our South Bend Tribune; Nice picture. During the was I went to Genova Italy and went around their cemetery. When you go to Germany the next time plan on side trip to Genova; it would be worth your while. It took our breath away and we were only 20 years old at the time. While there I purchased a book that shows some of the bigger than life monuments so if you would like to see a couple of the pictures I will try and scan a couple to send you. I think the name of the place is Veduta Generale Del Cimitero Di Staglieno.

Hello, Tim

Chitty told me about this site so I finally looked you up. All pictures are great work. Seems like you could make a living doing this. I took a shot of that Tejas warrior at Fair Park from with a slightly different perspective (heh..heh) a long time ago, before they protected it with chicken wire. Where's the stilt-bird?

Tim, I have substantial historical information about the Weeping Angel monument you recently photographed in the Oakland Cemetery (also known as the Angel of Grief).

The original artist, William Wetmore Story, was a friend of my great, great, grandfather. We have a family monument he carved that you can see on my website (www.ourweepingangel.com). You might enjoy some of the photography and poetry I have done with her.

Contact me if you would like the historical background information.

Tim, I to enjoy cemetries, there is a great peace for me when I visit them . Most people think it's weird, but I always say as I was told by my Grandfather, treasure your past, and you will know your future. I spend hours in the resting places and wonder who the people who rest there were and how the effected the world we live in today. Thanks for your artwork. Scott

I just got around to reading the DMN that featured your love of Angels. I too love Angels, and named my dog Angel. I have most of my family buried in Grove Hill. I am 38 yrs old, and have been in love with her ever since I can remember visiting Grove Hill at a young age. When I visit that place, I also have to pass her by and look at her weeping over her loved one. Used to beg my Mom to drive passed her, so I could her in pain of her loss. Just last year I took my newly husband to visit my buried family and showed him, the weeping Angel. I have commented to him, I wish we were wealthy so that we could have a marker like her. I have never gotten out to see just who she is weeping over. I have often wondered who she is sad for, and how her heart must be in major pain. In my heart I have always placed her at Grove to watch over all the missed loved ones. Her actions speak what hearts who visit feel. There are a lot of wonderful old markers at Grove Hill. I even have been cleaning off dirt from one marker, that shares my middle name Darlene, since I was very little. She is buried next to my families plots. That one has no Angels, but a picture with a lid that opens up to a young lady who her parents must have loved. I used to thank they were wealthy for having her picture on her grave and keeping fresh flowers out for her to look down from heaven and view. I have always wondered why she died so young. And how loving her parents were for placing her picture on her marker. I watched as the flowers on her grave began to stop, and wondered if her parents passed away, or were not able to visit the picture due to aging. I have even said prayers for her and her family since my early years. Each life does has a story. Just like my favorite movie, It's a wonderful life. Each life effects another. However, no marker has caught my heart like the Angel. As long as I am able to visit Grove Hill, I will continue to clean a marker, say a prayer, and pass the Angel who shows how my heart weeps for my loved ones. It was very nice to read that she caught your heart also. I am glad that I am not the only one who was captured by her affection to her loved one. On another note, be careful at that place. I have seen my share of drug users & homeless folks hanging out. It is not in the best of places. As the years go by, the area gets worse. I never go alone. May God bless you and your loved ones.

Although I live a long way from Dallas in SE Oklahoma, I buy Sunday's Dallas Morning News every week. I really enjoy the human interest articles. Sunday's article about your interest in Cemetery Angels caught my attention. I especially liked the back view of the "crying angel" located in Grove Hill Cemetery. Some time ago, Dallas Morning News ran a picture of a simular angel located in a New Orleans Cemetery. I clipped the picture. That Angel had dropped a scroll from his left hand. I supposed the grief was caused because that person was not found in the "Book of Life". What do you think? Morbid???

I'm another one who likes cemeteries. I guess because of my interest in tracing out my family history for 35 years, and I visit cemeteries often to get the dates.

Do you know about the angel in Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Texas which is wearing cowboy boots? This angel is near where my husband's parents are buried.

Regards, MaryE

You have a good eye! The images are very emotional and you've captured strong angles. Are the infrared images done with film and then scanned, or are you using filtration or some other means to capture an infrared image? I find that sometimes, splitting the channels ,in Photoshop, will render red information to a white tone and give an infrared looking effect. I teach at a Digital Learning center, www.digitaldooda.com. I spent time in Germany taking courses at the Leica Factory, when it was located in Wetzlar. Germany is a lovely place.

Dear Mr. Boss,
Thank you for sharing your lovely angels with the Dallas Morning News. I enjoyed your article and am glad to hear of another person who enjoys cemetaries as much as I do. What peaceful, beautiful places. I went to the web-site and viewed some of your other photos. You are blessed with a great gift. Thanks again for sharing.

Although our pictures are entirely different, A fully agree with the calmness experienced in visiting cemeteries. I relate to the verse in Exodus 20:12 that says: "Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land yhat the Lord your God is giving you.".

I look forward to meeting you sometine in one of our cemeteries. You have done a beautiful work.

I really enjoyed reading the column about you and your photos of cemetary angels in today's Dallas Morning News. My father-in-law died in 1991 and was buried at Grove Hill cemetary. His grave is located very near the weeping angel mentioned in the article. I was fascinated by it the first time I saw it, and I too have taken many pictures of the angel. I don't think I've ever seen a more moving testament to the grief felt at the death of a loved one.
Sandy Wilson 12-Dec-2004 18:40
Tim I enjoyed the Dallas Morning News article on your cemetery pictures, especially the angels. I have recently visited Calvary with a friend formerly from Dallas who has grandparents buried there. I visit old cemeteries, too, for the peacefulness and the statuary. My favorite in Texas is Glenwood in Houston which has a weeping angel plus many more angels. The untimate is Mt. Auburn in Cambridge, Mass. "Garden" cemeteries that were fashionable in the early 1900's like Mt. Auburn and Glenwood are very special places. I'll try to include a link to Glenwood and the weeping angel which has broken hands.

Just read the article in Dallas Morning News - Oakwood Cemetery in Waco has many angels. There is a small Roman Catholic Cemetery across the street from Oakwood that also has a grieving angel. I noticed the dress covers the feet of the angel in your photo. Angels are ALWAYS supposed to show their feet to show that they are made like humans and don't end in smoke (i.e. genies or ghosts). The grieving angel in Waco has her feet showing. I have HEARD that the grieving angels in different cemeteries are from Italy, but I haven't checked on that. My husband took pictures of angels and interesting epitaphs for me, but he died earlier this year. I'm not much of a photographer, but do love going to cemeteries to see them. I have a photo of young male angel that is in the Laredo Cemetery - I think he is the angel that watches over our military troups - (I THINK it is a bronze statue) There are also MANY MANY angels in the Laredo Cemetery. I've been to the cemetery in Hugo, OK - (there is one whole section dedicated to circus people and their headstones have elephants etched into the stone or perhaps a tightrope walker). Quite interesting. Good Luck with your Photos!

Tom,

I loved the article in the DMN about your angel photographs for several reasons. They are breathtaking (especially the infrareds) and I, too, am very interested in angels. (I am writing an inspirational book that deals with butterflies and angels). The pictures also interested me as I am originally from New Orleans - as you may now, there are incredible cemetary angels and grave ornaments. In New Orleans, all graves are above ground so all of the old graves have monuments - often with angels - for the graves. There is one famous one in a Metairie cemetary that a mother had built for her own gravesite. The story goes that she lived a less than ideal life as a "lady of the evening" and had given birth to a girl. The mother left instructions that when she died, that her grave be decorated with an angel with her hands on some locked gates (to heaven) to warn her daughter not to do as she had done and thus be denied heaven.

Keep up the good work.

Judy
