Beach & Boardwalk

There are three distinct beach areas along the south shore of Lake Ontario at Rochester, New York, separated by upscale housing. Webster Park is an eastern suburb. Sodus Bay is farther east along the shore.

The west side where the Genesee River flows into the lake is Charlotte (pronounced "shah-LOT" by natives). There are two breakwalls extending into the lake on either side of the harbor channel. Ontario Beach Park is to the west of the harbor.

On the east side, Irondequoit Bay meets the lake. Their are two small breakwalls and a very small public beach (no lifeguards). Fishing and boating are the primary activities here.

In between is Durand Eastman Park. A mile and a half of undeveloped shore line is where the most interesting cross section of people show up. Swimming is prohibited, so when it is 90 degrees, there will be hundreds of people in the water.
