L'église du Dompeter ou plus simplement appelée le Dompeter est l'ancienne église paroissiale de Molsheim. Située à la limite du ban communal mitoyen avec Avolsheim, son nom signifie "maison de Pierre - Domus Petri". Réputée être la plus vieille église d'Alsace, on sait qu'elle a été consacrée par le pape alsacien Léon IX entre 1049 et 1053 alors que la légende la ferait remonter à la fin de l'empire romain ou aux premiers siècles de la chrétienté.
Des fouilles menées en 1914 révélèrent des traces d'un édifice daté du VIIe siècle. De style roman, elle fût reconstruite sur le même plan au XIe siècle mais agrandie. L'église subit des transformations au cours des siècles suivants dont la plus importante est la reconstruction de la tour, détruite en partie par la foudre en 1746.


The church of Dompeter or more simply called Dompeter is the old parish church of Molsheim. Located at the limit of Avolsheim, still in use, its name means “stone-built house - Domus petri”. Considered to be the oldest church of Alsace, it is known that it was devoted by the Alsatian pope Leon IX between 1049 and 1053 whereas the legend would date it back to the end of the Roman empire or to the first centuries of Christendom.
Excavations in 1914 revealed traces of a building dated from the VII th century. Of Romance style, it was rebuilt on the same plan to the XIth century but was increased. The church has sudden transformations during the following centuries of which most important is the rebuilding of the tower, destroyed partly by the lightning in 1746.
The thousand-years-old tree at the entrance of the church died at the beginning of this century.
