6-25-2016 female Hairy Woodpecker

Near the Wenatchee River, Plain, Washington

Not sure why they have such an unattractive name. In the early
Summer they always look crisp and clean.

Many thanks for your very kind comment, Hal. BTW, I read that the 'hairy' woodpecker gets its
name from the tiny hairs that grow out of its upper mandible. If you look closely you
can see them.

l too wondered at the unattractive name.
Nothing hairy about your photograph though.
