By machine nowadays, Pete. Until 40 years ago, it was by hand. The bolls are seated in a stem that has very sharp ends, and you can really cut your fingers easily if you don't know what you're doing. I am going back over the weekend for some close-ups...

excellent - I didn't have an idea of what cotton plants look like. Hope they are harvested by machine and not by back breaking work?
