The Saguaro cactus is found exclusively in the Sonoran desert of Arizona and Mexico (and a few in California). The white/yellow Saguaro cactus flower is the state flower of Arizona. They cactus blooms in May and June. The flower opens during the cool night and closes again by the next mid-day. The cactus is thought to grow only about an inch a year and usually starts life in the shadow of a "nurse" plant which offers shelter for the infant cactus. Saguaro can live to 150-200 years old. It is possible for it to have 25 arms, but this one in the front of my photo has more arms than I usually see in the Phoenix area. A full grown Saguaro could be 40-60 feet tall and weigh between 3200-4800 pounds.
