Sandhill crane/Ms Earl



We received this female crane on October 21,2011 from the International Crane Foundation. She was fitted with a transmitter in the banding project and suffered capture myopathy.

Exertional or capture myopathy (disease of the muscle) is a non-infectious disease of muscles that is characterized by damage to muscle tissue brought about by physiological changes, usually following extreme exertion, struggle and/or stress. The potential for this condition can occur anywhere animals are pursued, trapped and handled. Both mammals and birds of all ages and sexes are susceptible to this disease.

There isn't much left to say except I admire the work you do and how your life is second to the lives of these birds. Your dedication will not go unnoticed by the important one.. Also, I always remember your words when someone comments"what is one bird when you need to save the species" Your answer is: Tell that to the one bird we saved. It is indeed a pleasure to learn from you.

We have a couple nesting in the vicinty somewhere and who come to our back door looking for food - which we don't give them. They are so beautiful, well as alarm clocks they seem to have no sense of time

Jimmy Muheebwa(Uganda) Great work comrades!!Am disheartened - a young Grey Crowned Cranes died on 5th Jan 2012, died enroute to my home for(elementary)wing rehabilitation. An elderly woman and traditional healer near my home has before worked with me to rehabilitate a broken crane limb. I knew we could fix the wing of this young when a colleague alerted me of its pain. Too bad it died before I could reach to it. Extreme pain and myopathy are to blame?.
