Woodcock Portrait

Erie National Wildlife Refuge

This is the photo you get when you're 8 feet from a woodcock, using a 400mm lens, 1.4x extender, and a Kenko extension tube. I nearly walked right past him as he crouched in a small marshy spot not 15 feet off the trail. In fact, 2 ladies out walking on the trail did walk right past him and never saw him. He was very difficult to see, his feather pattern making him blend in with the surrounding vegetation. I showed the woodcock to them when they walked back later.

Just a great picture! I love the way this captures the way the eyes are positioned on the side of the head.v

Don't think I've seen this one captured so close. What an interesting and secretive species. V
