This male shows the characteristic green back of the Allen's; males viewed from the front can't be readily be distinguished between the two species by plumage. When I took this picture, and those of a number of other Allen's on this website, the male Allen's were doing their characteristic display flight, with a back-and-forth horizontal shuttle preceding an ascent and dive.
