Black-bellied Plover, breeding plumage, raised wings

This photo shows the black axillary coverts (armpit feathers) of the Black-bellied Plover fanned out, indicating their surprising length. This is the only species with black axillaries; they remain black even in the non-breeding plumage, when the bird otherwise appears a mostly uniform gray.
