Long-billed Dowitcher, non-breeding plumage, flying

Radio Road, Redwood Shores

The white patch on the forward edge of the underwing, formed by the lesser coverts, marks this as a Long-billed; Short-billed has barred feathers, like the rest of the underwing. See Sibley's drawings of the two species in flight. Thanks to Michael Todd for pointing this out to me.

The white patch formed by the unmarked lesser coverts mark this one as a Long-billed.
