Below are some pictures from a bird photography expedition to Ecuador, September 7-16, 2013. I was with congenial fellow photographers Dan Suzio, Gary Weller, and Yamil Saenz; Yamil organized this very successful trip. We were hosted and guided by the superb Jorge Cruz, proprietor of Ecolodges San Jorge, himself a photographer, who planned a great eight day expedition and got us to places where we could see and photograph the birds shown here. We took pictures at Ecolodge San Jorge, Quito, especially good for hummingbirds; and at Yanacocha, Antisana, and Jerusalem, all also in the temperate forests and paramo in the outskirts of Quito (8000 to 13,000 feet); at Ecolodge San Jorge, Tandayapa, fabulous for hummingbirds and tanagers in the cloudforest (5000 feet); at Ecolodge San Jorge, Milpe, in the rainforest-cloudforest transitional area (3000 feet); and under the guidance of Angel Paz at Refugio Paz de los Aves (cloudforest, 4600 feet), where we visited a Cock-of-the-Rock lek, and enjoyed the special access to antpittas, tanagers, and hummingbirds that Angel provides. I strongly recommend Ecolodges San Jorge for birders and bird photographers looking to enjoy the fabulous birds of Ecuador.
