Guest, they are innocent man! How can a lass proud of her culture needs to be asked? They want to be part of their valued culture. See the joy and all-out white teeth to get an answer!
Guest 17-Apr-2012 22:17
Forgive me in advance if I offend but I have to ask:
Is a girl free to say "No I don't want to participate this year"
Can she refuse?
Guest 04-Jan-2012 16:18
this is an exibition of the 15century primitive african humanity which has no place on the modern world. am very surprised, i now understand why hiv aids has been this countries daily bread.
the world should stop waisting time on nuclear countries and capture this nonsense king to the ICC. what!!!!! does this country have any idea about develoment at all? Beautiful girls like these for a monkey king like him?

People, plis remember that the swazi king is 10 times richer than his country. Therefore if your child is seen by the king at the reed dance and he marries her it means you get a portion from his riches. So these girls are forced by circumstances to attend the dance. Their hope are for the king to identify them, marry them so their families would come out of poverty. Please do not say they are not forced because they are!

My jen indicates difficulty with getting cloth of same primary colours. i really should learn where these bright clean colours originate. i have tried getting green but it is too dull in hue. i should go look back in my chem books i suppose.

I cannot believe that people actually use these traditional behaviour and compare it to their own culture and their own idea of what is right and wrong......wake up and smell the roses guys. Have you all gone nuts....probly very few of you come from Africa or Southern Africa for that matter. Aids is not a uniquely African disease, why bring it into the equation at all??? This is what tradition is all about. People commenting negatively, or commenting about the "sexual" nature and "nudity" in the pics should rather go to the porn sites that they probly prefer. They do not belong here. If you cant except africa for what it is, rather do not comment and log out. I am currently doing research on the rain dance, the snake dance, the ring dance, the reed dance, stick dance and the wedding dance. If anyone have some more info on these cultural traditions, please let me know.

Oh yah, they really look like they're malnourished and starving - NOT!

All of these girls look healthy and well-fed. Gee, I guess they don't need
the pizza and hamburgers and other CRAP that you think they should be eating
because they're "poor", and can't afford it.. They're probably eating healthier
food than you, you asshole. Veggies and grains, and a very small amount of
meat. Too much meat is bad for you anyways, RIGHT????
Duh!

More arrogant First-World perspective (IE, total lack of perspective).

They're getting enough food to appear physically healthy.
Probably getting love and affection from parents.
What the f&*$ more do children REALLY need? Nothing!
Everything else is secondary.

No need for designer jeans/shoes. No need for cellphones(although
some appear to be using cellphones as decorations - god help them,
the infestation has spread there, too, although the cellphones aren't
glued to their ears like they are here in the USA). No need for their
own cars. All of that shite is superfluous. Americans are in HUGE
debt as a nation because we wanted all that, and look where it's
gotten us! Having MORE and MORE possessions does NOT always
make you happier.

Bleh!

Thank you Lomdumo for educating these ignorant people who think they need to save us from our own culture - Why don't they take a minute to think about their own ills - we could list a few but because we Swazis are good people we respect other people's ways of doing things
Guest 19-Jan-2009 01:49

Guest 23-Dec-2008 20:33
i bet they cannot smile the same way about how much food there is at home because there isnt...or about how much educative opportunities exist in the future for them because they dont exist ...all because of the very man they attended the event for! how sad and contradicting.

Ben you are wrong i am a swazi myself and i am disgreced at how ignorant you are when you are a african you talk about what you don't know i don't think you are an african if you behave like this i don't understand why you need to be rude about our culture it not your problem if it is it is a problem it is the people of swaziland who would change it i think its nice i have never went but i would like to one day it is what the people of swaziland are doing it ideantifies them amoung other african nations and the world
would you bring culture forward for us to acces you do NOT seem like a african brother because of the way you run your mouth right now i am proud to what i am and you should be proud of who you are and not talk about our culture like that

For whatever reason, any person with a sounding mind cannot support this cultural nonsense and public nudity. This primitive cultural behaviour has increased the sexual curiosity of young ones. It is no wonder that Swaziland has one of the highest H.I.V infection rates in the world.

Good people I am a born and bred Swazi and would like to clarify a few things. First and foremost nobody forces the girls to participate in the reed dance. It is actually an honor for one to take part in this awesome ceremony. And secondly, the reed dance was not constituted so the king could pick a wife. It is a way to pay homage to the queen mother (king's mother). The maidens go out into the bush and gather the reeds, which are then used to fence the queen's residence. Having said all that, all of you who think the reed dance serves to supply the king with wives are dead wrong. Actually, the king has picked only 4 of his 12 wives from the reed dance. And can all those ignorant people who keep talking about how these kids could learning information technology shut up because this ceremony takes place when school is off session. Thank you....Long live the reed dance!

All rise africans. This girl in the extreme right is so tender, beautiful and innocent. She should be in school learning what info tech has for her and her future and not be lining up for one stupid king to abuse her decency and beauty.
MIGUEL QUARSHIE 30-Nov-2007 10:46
THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. THIS KING IS REALLY LIVING LIKE SOLOMON, BUT HE SHOULD ALSO BEAR IN MIND THAT HE WILL FALL LIKE SOLOMON. THESE GIRLS HAVE A RIGHT TO EDUCATION NOT SEX. ASSUMING HE CHOOSES THE GIRL AT THE EXTREME RIGHT, HOW WILL HE FILL IN BED WITH HER DAUGHTERS SIZE? WE SHOULD STOP PRETENDING AND REACT.
Guest 12-Nov-2007 14:11
