The bridge takes its name from the toll amount, which was double the usual rate, or 6 last for pedestrians and 2 tournaments for riders.
The current iron bridge, a single arch, will be built in 1882 in aligning the street Arcole. It exceeds 5 metres 40 metres from the Petit-Pont neighbour. A marble slab indicates "Pont au Double rebuilt in the Republic, 1881-1882". The cast iron balustrades are covered with copper.
